Frequently asked questions
Why buy from Scottish Knight Leather?
‘I bought a belt from a store and it is stamped with “Genuine Leather”. I only paid € 39.99 for the belt. What makes your leather so different?’
The leather I use is full grain leather. A leather belt from various stores is a mixture of leather and corium. The fibers are loose, so the leather is pressed with machines during tanning to tighten the fibers. After time, these fibers will loosen and develop weak spots.
Full grain leather will very rarely develop a weak spot. If this is the case, it is a natural occurrence in the animal and not in the tanning process.
I only use full grain leather. Inferior leather has no room on my workbench.
Are leather goods art?
Is the craft of leather goods an art? I think so. If leather is hallmarked, braided, with unique colors or a unique design, it is!
Which styles do I prefer?
Every leatherworker has a style or a few styles that they are passionate about. I prefer classical, medieval and Celtic. Occasionally I do biker and Allgäu styles. If you are looking for something unique, let us talk and see what we can achieve together.
This involves passion for the style. Same reason an artist paints in one or two styles. Styles that hold an interest and passion for the artist.
The Sheridan or cowboy style holds no interest for me, therefore I prefer to not create items in that particular style.
How long will my order take?
It all depends upon current orders. But I will do my best to have your item ready as quickly as possible.
What are your prices?
Good question, but difficult to answer. There are many factors taken into account in order to offer a cost. Dimensions, colouring, tooling, hours, type of leather, metal parts, etc. You will be informed of the price upon our initial meeting and be assured that I will not sacrifice quality or cut corners.
Veg-Tan leather versus chrome leather?
People have allergies to numerous things. Nickle is one. All metals used in my leather items are Nickle free. Also, some leathers are tanned with metals (Chrome Leather) and can cause allergic reactions. I prefer to not use this leather but rather Veg-Tan or vegetable tanned leather.
I will use Chrome Leather only when specifically requested.
How do I measure for a belt?
Measuring from where the buckle pin and buckle meet to the center of the hole most often used. Be mindful to go under the loop near the buckle. If you are measuring use a flat buckle, measure from the pin to the hole.
Do you use Velcro or plastic parts?
Plastic does not match leather, I feel. Would one purchase a new house and install plastic door handles? Not likely. Plastic snaps break too easily and velcro works well for nylon sheaths, backpacks or bags, but to create a beautiful bag or mobile case from leather with a Velcro fastener, takes the beauty away from a handmade item. Not something I will do.
